DIY - Dry Skin Rub

IMG_0659.jpg

A few years ago I discovered the power of essential oils.  I was a first-time Mamacita and was inspired to use all natural products on my daughter especially when she got sick.  In our home, we have oily recipes for almost every ailment you could think of and will choose oils over traditional medicine most of the time.

As I learned more about oils, I started to experiment and made my own all natural products that we use in our everyday life.  There are two products that have become our holy grails - a Dry Skin Rub and Cough Rub (more on this one on another post).  Today, we will focus on the Dry Skin Rub.

Every year as the season changes from winter to spring, my skin becomes really dry and itchy.  It doesn’t fail and no matter how much lotion I rub on, the itch remains.  I even stopped using scented lotions and body wash which helps a little.   One day, I came across a recipe for a DIY skin rub that people had used to treat eczema, dry skin, etc.  Coincidently, I had all the ingredients I needed at home and decided to give it a try.  Since I made a batch big enough to fill a few containers, I shared my rub with some of my family members.  The feedback I received from them was all positive and even got requests for more.  My brother-in-law who has really dry hands loves it because it provides much needed hydration and prevents it from cracking especially during the winter months.  One of my nieces used it to help with her eczema.  It only took a few applications for her skin to start healing and even the discoloration the eczema was causing started fading away.

This recipe has some of the most powerful essential oils that help nourish your skin such as Frankincense, Lavender, Melrose, Elemi and Geranium.  Plus it is made with the most natural ingredients such as beeswax, shea butter, coconut oil and Vitamin E.  Aside from the essential oils, I pick up most of the other ingredients from Amazon (I will add a link for each below).  The essential oils are from Young Living, I don’t buy any other brand but YL.

Below is the recipe and the how-to instructions.  There’s a short how-to video of the process linked here.

TOOLS REQUIRED

Medium sized pot

Heatproof metal or glass bowl

3 - 1oz glass jars

INGREDIENTS

2 oz Coconut Oil

4 oz Shea Butter

1 oz Beeswax

1 oz Vitamin E oil

Frankincense - 12 drops

Lavender - 12 drops

Melrose - 12 drops

Elemi - 12 drops

Geranium - 12 drops

INSTRUCTIONS

Fill your medium sized pot with water (about half full) and place over medium heat.  Place your heatproof bowl on top of the pot.  Melt the Shea Butter, Beeswax and Coconut Oil.  Once your ingredients are melted, remove bowl from pot and place on a hard surface.  Add the essential oils and Vitamin E.  Stir with a spoon to mix the ingredients.  We have to move a bit quickly here because as the ingredients start to cool, the solve will start to harden.

After stirring solve, pour into a glass jar, cover and refrigerate for about 4 hours.  The batch should be able to fill 2-3 of these glass jars.  If you want to buy a bigger jar to pour the entire batch of solve in one, you could do that too.

If you try this recipe, I hope it provides the same powerful benefits for you as it does for us.  Let us know in the comments if you did try this out or if you have any questions.
